Stoic Scroll Privacy Policy
The short version: Stoic Scroll has no accounts and no sign-in. We do not collect your name, email, location, or contacts. What you read and what you write stay on your device, with two exceptions you choose: when you ask Seneca for a reply, that one reflection is sent once to generate the reply and is not stored; and when you tap Study deeper, the passage itself (a public-domain text, not anything you wrote) is sent so a reading can be generated. The only other data processed off your device relates to App Store purchases, handled by Apple and our subscription processor, RevenueCat.
What stays on your device
Everything about how you use Stoic Scroll is stored locally on your phone and is never transmitted to us:
- Where you are in the scroll and which passages you have read
- Your streak and practice history
- Everything you write in the journal
- The lists you sort in What is up to you
- Saved passages
- Reminder preferences
Deleting the app deletes this data. Reminders are scheduled locally on your device — we do not send push notifications from a server.
Seneca's replies
When you write a reflection, or ask Seneca about a list you have sorted, the app offers a short reply in the voice of Seneca. Generating it requires sending that one piece of writing off your device, so this is the single feature that transmits anything you have written. Here is exactly what happens:
- The text of that one reflection (or that one sorted list), the prompt it answered, and your anonymous app user ID are sent to our server at thomassoftwarellc.com.
- Our server forwards it to Anthropic, whose Claude model writes the reply. Anthropic processes it under their API terms.
- The reply comes back and is stored on your device with your entry.
We do not store your reflections. The text exists in our server's memory for the few seconds the request takes and is never written to disk, never logged, and never retained. The only thing our server keeps is a count of how many replies each anonymous app user ID has requested, so we can tell when a free allowance is used up.
Your other entries are never sent anywhere. If you never request a reply, nothing you write ever leaves your phone.
Study deeper
Tapping the book icon on a passage opens a short reading of it: where it comes from, what it says, and how to practise it. That reading is generated the first time anyone asks for it and then kept, so it does not involve anything personal to you:
- The passage text and its citation (public-domain material that ships inside the app) and your anonymous app user ID are sent to our server. The ID is used only to confirm an active subscription.
- If no reading exists yet, our server sends the passage to Anthropic to write one, then stores the reading on our server keyed to the passage — not to you — so the next reader gets the same one.
- The reading is also kept on your device so it opens instantly next time.
Nothing you have written is involved. Our server keeps a count of requests per anonymous app user ID and nothing else about you.
Purchases and subscriptions
Payments are processed entirely by Apple. We never see your payment details. To validate your subscription and unlock Pro features, the app uses RevenueCat, which processes:
- A randomly generated anonymous app user ID (not linked to your identity)
- Your purchase history for this app
- A device identifier (Apple's identifier for vendor)
This data is used solely to deliver what you purchased. It is not linked to your identity and is not used for advertising or tracking.
App updates
The app periodically checks Expo's update service (EAS Update) for bug fixes and improvements. These requests contain basic, non-identifying technical information (such as app version and platform) needed to serve the right update. See Expo's privacy policy.
What we don't do
- No advertising and no ad networks
- No analytics or tracking SDKs
- No selling or sharing of data with third parties for marketing
- No selling of anything you write, ever, to anyone
- Your reflections are never used to train any AI model
- No data collection from children — the app collects no personal data
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update this page and the effective date above. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
